Schmitt Elementary is proud to announce that it has received designation as a California Gold Ribbon School. Schmitt is one of several schools to earn this distinction within the Westminster School District. Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies.
Schmitt focused on teaching children to improve their reading skills. Our school’s model practice has been centered on explicit reading fluency instruction. This success in increasing student achievement couldn’t have been possible without the focus around specific instruction in the major parts of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) which was identified as the best approach to teaching children to read.
